Nigeria is 47 years old, and yet……..

I woke up this morning at 4:55am to the loudspeakers of my neigbor, playing Nigeria Jagajaga by Eedris Abdulkareem, and I was like….what da….it was just then I remembered that Nigeria is 47-years old today. For the next 45-minutes, this neigbor of mine kept increasing the volume of these speakers…..how I wished that PHCN would just ’snap’ as they usually do……..until I remembered, that his PHCN line and mine are on the same pole……damn!!!

So Nigeria is 47-year old today, whether we like it or not. There are 150million different feelings Nigerians have towards the motherland….can I say, its between every degree of optimism for a better future and total dissapointment, looking back to how far we have come. We have come a long way, yet we haven’t come a long way. So many expectations, so many dissapointments, but still there are many things to be thankful for. Like one Rev. Kukah said in yesterdays Punch, “Nigeria has more to celebrate than to cry for, despite the fact that reading from the Book of Lamentations seems to be the most media-savvy thing to do…We stumble and funble through things, but its just like the story of the growth of any human being or entity.”

Its a day of mixed joy and pain, if only I could join ‘joy’ and ‘pain’ together and get a good word out of it. With the House of Representatives still under the lime-light, what can we say? the cost of renovation of a house is the amount that could make 60-Nigerians instant millionaires? and yet people are dying everyday from hunger and thirst? This is the same woman, from news sources that claimed she distributed Ramadan gifts to lawmakers worth 40Million-Naira plus. May God deliver us.

I was net-searching actually for the Nigerian National anthem….this is the most-inspiring one I found.

Back to my wake-up music, although I would greet Nigeria a Happy and a Hearty Birthday, let me alter the line a little, the truth is: Nigeria is still jagajaga!!
