a moment of silence, Benazir Bhutto is DEAD
RAWALPINDI, Pakistan – Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide attack that also killed at least 20 others at the end of a campaign rally, aides said. The surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred……
The 16th Prime Minister of Pakistan, Ms. Benazir Bhutto has been assasinated.
Born in 1953, she proved to be a hard nut to crack as she climbed higher and higher into high echelons of power and influence which women before her never dared venture into. Educated in the U.S and the U.K, she is the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state and she did it twice.
On December 2, 1988 Benazir Bhutto was sworn in as Prime Minister of Pakistan, becoming the first woman to head the government of an Islamic State.
In the preceding decade of political struggle, Ms. Bhutto was arrested on numerous occasions; in all she spent nearly 6 years either in prison or under detention for her dedicated leadership of the then opposition Pakistan Peoples Party. Throughout the years in opposition, she pledged to transform Pakistani society by focusing attention on programs for health, social welfare and education for the underprivileged.
Since assuming the office of Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto has emphasized the need to heal past wounds and to put an end to the divisions in Pakistani society – including reducing discrimination between men and women. Ms. Bhutto has launched a nationwide program of health and education reform.

I have been following news about this woman for the past 10-15years. My interest in who she really was grew after listening to a lot of discussions/arguments and ‘points of view’ of some of my pakistani, indian and iranian classmates. I was like, ‘for everyone to be talking about her, she must really have some guts’ – I mean, for a woman.
Its quite pathetic to see that in this age of democracy, there are so many demon-crazy people who do not want democracy to succeed. Such is the man who detonated the Bomb that killed Bhutto and a host of others. He rode his motorcycle to hell.
Police warned citizens to stay home as they expected rioting to break out in city streets in reaction to the death. Police sources told CNN the bomber, who was riding a motorcycle, blew himself up near Bhutto’s vehicle
I remember how I thought ‘thank-God-she-made-it’ last October 18th when she arrived back from exile and was almost killed. Its sad to see her depart this way.
Her death just about wraps up the year 2007.
I wonder why some people don’t just like peace and quiet. With her death, Pakistan’s political battle has just begun because her supporters will definitely not give up.
Her supporters at the hospital began chanting “Dog, Musharraf, dog,” referring to Pakistan’s president, Pervez Musharraf. Some of them smashed the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit, others burst into tears.
Nawaz Sharif, also a former Pakistani leader, said outside the hospital where Bhutto had died following the blast: “I assure you that I will fight your war from now on,” he told Bhutto’s supporters
He said he shared the grief of “the entire nation”.
The history of Pakistan can never be complete without the struggles of Benazir Bhutto.
For me, she is the epitome of what a woman should be: someone that could stand up for herself. She stood up for what she believed in, and the whole world knew it.
Who can withstand a woman who knows who she is?
I so much appreciated her women oriented policies, which included plans to establish women’s police stations, courts, and women’s development banks. These were quite unachieved due to a lot of wolves in Pakistani government from left and right.
She was the symbol of modernity and freedom. Now that she’s gone, the truth is that her spirit of freedom just arose in many hearts and the battle just began.
to her killers: your decision to kill Bhutto is only an admittance of the fact that you couldn’t withstand her competition.
