I heard the news yesterday on the Radio, and since then, I have been not just a little saddened.
Our very own Gani Fawehinmi is dead.
888 – – – – 888

Eminent lawyer and Social critic, Gani Fawehinmi, died in a hospital in Ikeja, Lagos this morning at the age of 71 years after a protracted battle with lung cancer The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and some eminent lawyers have described the death
of the legal icon, as a great loss to the law profession and the country. NBA President, Rotimi Akeredolu, described Gani’s passage as a great loss not only to the legal profession, but the country as a whole. Akeredolu said that the NBA was consoled by Gani’s consistency to national interest and his life enduring lesson to the legal profession, the News Agancy of Nigeria (NAN) reports. Now that Papa Gani Fawehinmi is dead, who will stand up to defend the defenseless? Who will take interest in the uninterestable. To whom can the rest of us run to?
Now that Papa Gani Fawehinmi is dead, who will speak for us? – someone with enough repute – who lives up to the words: honesty and dignity; someone we have always believed in – who puts the nation before himself and every other thing; someone we can be sure about – who won’t dissapoint when he gives you a promise; someone whose ‘state of mind’ crosses the borders where tribal inclinations, financial status and musterable powers put the Nigerian masses to a perpetual loss; someone who knows the real issues, and puts these first and foremost.
Our little President is dead, the one voice crying against the wrong doers and giving us hope is gone, but he cannot be forgotten. Our little President is dead but his legacy cannot be forgotten.
Our little President is dead, the single name that Lawyers respected, the name the corrupt Nigerian Police Force held regard for, the name that warmed hearts of both Christians and Muslims, the name corrupt politicians feared, a name known for good in this local and in the international – Gani Fawehinmi: we always wanted to hear what he would say.
Now that Papa Gani Fawehinmi is dead, the host of Nigeria’s corrupt politicians will be happy. They will throw a party. Hip, hip, hip, hurrraaayy. Finally, the microphone is off, NEPA has taken light, and the light bulb has been removed. The lone voice that had the guts to speak against their misdeeds is forever gone, never to return. Now, these devils in human flesh, with Nigerian passports can restrategize, repolarize, relaunch and redeploy.
but sirs, let this word go out to you all and yonder: Our little President is dead, but he is still alive – in our hearts. He inspired us, and Yes we are inspired. We are inspired by all that he said while he was with us, what he wrote, what he did and didn’t do, the Nigeria he believed in, and most especially, how he lived. Our lawyer has passed on – he did his best, we will do the rest.
Rest in Peace, Papa Gani Fawehinmi,

Just heard this today and it’s sad. One of the good Nigerian elder statesmen. May his soul rest in peace.
I wish Nigeria has a system where people like him could have impacted our lives more. People like him in Nigeria are like background noise screaming for the country to go on the right path; but the greedy, corrupt ones hold the steering wheels.
