I heard on the radio two days ago that comments left on President Goodluck Jonathan’s Facebook page influenced his decision to bow to FIFA’s threat to ban Nigeria if we decide to pull out of International Football, as per our President’s former decision. For more, read here.

While Nigerian Football needs a total overhauling, for Mr. President to go back on his decision looks to me like an attempt to throw his words around for the sake of speaking. He could just have stuck to his decision, let FIFA be FIFA and let Nigeria be Nigeria. Nigeria is a sovereign Nation. Its FIFA that has something to loose, not Nigeria. Anyway, FIFA, FIFA, FIFA has now become a valid reason for corruption within the Nigerian Football Federation.

The new committee(Presidential Committee on Football Development) that was set up to oversee Football until further notice in Nigeria had no better idea than set up a President Goodluck Jonathan Football Cup.

In the heat of the moment, the NFF board had an emergency meeting yesterday, the second in seven days, to review the state of its affiars.

At the end of the meeting presided over by Maigari, the board resolved that all issues surroundng the proposed elections billed for August 21, will now be discussed by the congress made up of the state FA chairmen and their secretaries.

The congress will also decide whether to extend the tenure of the current board by five months to ensure a smooth election.

The board also instituted a national U-16 tournament for male and female among the 774 local councils in the country to be called the President Goodluck Jonathan Cup.

It resolved that it would pay particular attention to age grade football development, ensuring that age cheats are rooted out from representing the national teams.

Meanwhile, FIFA has formally stayed action on enforcing a ban on Nigeria and has even gone on to acknowledge the change of guards at NFF

Is this not another play of words? is this not another design to flatter Nigerians? Is a President Goodluck Jonathan’s Cup the answer to bribery, corruption, scandals, etc in the Football Glass house?
