An advice to Pastor W.F.Kumuyi to make public how his successor will be chosen or elected before it is too late

I find the following April 07, 2011 article very interesting. I’m wondering, why is it that some people want to know who the next Moses will be (Joshua) and yet turn deaf ears to the living Moses. But the argument is quite true that pastor W.F Kumuyi hasn’t named a successor yet – even in his old age.

Pastor W.F Kumuyi is the General Overseer of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) with headquarters in Nigeria. According to the data available to me, his ministry has over one million active members in Nigeria alone. Additionally, the impact of his ministry is global. He is one of the most respected and trusted men of God in the world today. He is a septuagenarian. He is a gifted teacher and preacher of the undiluted word of God. I have followed his ministry since 1986 to date. I have never been a member of his ministry but I have listened to his tapes and watched his video seminars and programs on the internet many times. I attended his programs in 1986-1987 in Lagos a couple of times. I use this medium to congratulate Pastor Kumuyi on his remarriage to a long time member of his church. I pray that he will find joy in it.

I am aware that he has many pastors under him. I am not aware that he has named a successor to take over from him after his demise. At his age, the individual who will take over from him as the next General Superintendent of DCLM should have been named or known to the public because the Bible says “the days of our years are threescore years and ten (seventy years) – or even, if by reason of strength, fourscore years (eighty years); yet is their pride (in additional years) only labor and sorrow, for it is soon gone, and we fly away.” Ps. 90:10 (Amplified Bible).

History teaches us that the indigenous churches in Nigeria were embroiled in leadership tussle after the death of the founders of those churches. After Pastor Bilewu Oshoffa died in an automobile accident, several lawsuits were filed by ministers in Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) and each plaintiff in those cases claimed that it was the will of God or the choice of Pastor Bilewu Oshoffa that he/she should become the next Pastor of CCC worldwide. The fight for the throne in CCC was so bad that an allegation of using charms by rival claimants to suppress one another was very rampant. The attendance of members of CCC has drastically reduced due in part to the leadership succession problem.

We have no control over death. The late Archbishop Benson Idahosa of the Church of God Mission was a rare breed who brought glamour, pomp and pageantry to the Charismatic movement in Nigeria. He was very instrumental in establishing the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria. He was known all over the world as a great minister of the gospel, a fearless statesman and an acknowledged faith healer. We fondly called him “Papa”. During my days in University of Benin, I attended some of his meetings and I was profoundly struck by his knowledge of the scriptures and wisdom and his boldness. He died suddenly and his death created a vacuum in Church of God Mission. In spite of many protests, his wife Margaret Idahosa was ordained as his successor. Some influential ministers and bishops of Church of God Mission under the late Idahosa left the Church of God Mission to set up their own ministries because they were dissatisfied with the choice of Margaret Idahosa. They argued that Papa would not have wanted his wife to succeed him. The problem was caused by the fact that the late Archbishop Idahosa did not publicly designate anyone as his successor prior to his death.

Recently, there was a serious legal battle for succession to the top position of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria among senior pastors of that church following the expiration of the term of Rev. Wilson Badejo as the General Overseer. Although Foursquare Gospel Church is a Bible-believing church, that was not sufficient to abate the fight for leadership of the church in a court of law! Also and in 2010, there was a lawsuit in the Federal High Court Lagos for the control of the C.A.C churches worldwide between a faction led by Pastor Olusheye and another faction led by Pastor Akintola of CAC. In Canon law, the Roman Catholic Church provides for the election of a Pope. Under that law, once an incumbent Pope dies or resigns, the dean of the College of Cardinals called a conclave of all cardinals. The cardinals will then retire to a solitary place to seek the face of God and pray and elect a new Pope. This practice has worked for the Roman Catholic Church for centuries without any problem. The Charismatic Church can learn from the Catholic practice.

Deeper Christian Life Ministry emphasizes holiness more than anything else. God forbids that it should be torn apart after the departure of Pastor W.F. Kumuyi for his failure to designate a person to take over from him. It is not sufficient for Pastor Kumuyi to have groomed a person to take over from him. In addition, he must publicly mention the name of the person to the church so that there will be no doubt in the minds of the members of Deeper Life as to the new leader. Telling a would-be successor in secret that he is going to be the next successor is not sufficient. Even telling a group of very senior leaders of the church that a particular person has been designated as a successor may not be sufficient. By now, Pastor Kumuyi should have publicly addressed issues like how to appoint a successor to the leadership of DCLM, the duration of leadership i.e. whether it is for life or for fixed number of years {say five), and the removal of the successor for cause, among others.

Several years before Biblical Moses died, he had been publicly grooming Joshua to take over from him. The Israelites knew that Joshua would be the next leader after the death of Moses the man of God. Anyone reading the handwriting on the wall knows that the next leader of Living Faith World Outreach ministry will be Bishop Abioye or any of the two natural sons of Bishop David Oyedepo who are now pastors in his ministry. I was informed that Bishop David Oyedepo has made it clear that he did not want his wife to succeed him. In RCCG, there is not likely to be a major problem in choosing the next general overseer after the demise of the incumbent because the Governing Council is primarily responsible for taking major decisions in that church. However, there is likely to be a slight problem because the Governing Council does not take a decision unless all the members of the Governing Council agree. What if they do not all agree? I think that the safer thing to do is for the incumbent to name his successor to the Governing Council or to give several names to the Governing Council and demand that the members prayerfully choose one of the names as his successor.

Finally, I think Pastor W.F Kumuyi is a blessing to the Body of Christ in Nigeria. He taught me how to handle persecutions and, by the grace of God, I have remained a Christian in spite of my many trials and tribulations. I will hate to see the personality of this great minister of the gospel shred into pieces after his demise for failure to choose someone to succeed him. Pastor Kumuyi will go down in history as one of the greatest giants of the faith in Africa. Succession problem can be alleviated by having a document such as a bye law, charter or constitution that will clearly spell out the way a new leader will be chosen or elected. Also, every member of the church should have a copy of it. In today’s internet age, a copy of the bye- law/charter/articles/constitution of the church can be conspicuously placed on the church’s website for all members to read. The document, in my opinion should address succession to the top position in the church, among other issues. Leadership tussle in the church distracts from the primary duty of evangelism and creates unnecessary division and destruction in the church.

Success without a successor is failure. Pastor W.F. Kumuyi must act now.
