No fewer than 41 inmates of Damaturu Prison in Damaturu, Yobe State are believed to have escaped after suspected Boko Haram gunmen attacked the facility on Sunday morning.

The attackers also reportedly killed a prison official and injured two others severely.

Reports said the escapees are suspected Boko Haram members arrested after two days of gun battles with the Joint Task Force in the state capital last week.

The prison is a temporary holding facility where suspects are usually kept for a short period before being transferred to either Potiskum Prison or other states.
It is said to have dwarf walls and is guarded by a few warders.

Prison authorities in Abuja as well as the state commissioner of police, Patrick Egbuniwe, confirmed the incident.
The state capital has been under a 24-hour curfew after the JTF-Boko Haram clash, which left about 30 persons dead

It is surprising how the attack occurred successfuly in spite of the curfew.
