Book Review: Barrack Obama, The Audacity of Hope

Yes, o, I just finished reading Obama’s Audacity of Hope. I bought my ‘pirated copy’ for NGN600(six hundred Naira only) just about a week ago. The original hard-bound copy costs NGN1,500 (One thousand and Five hundred Naira). The only time I had to read it was early in the morning, and late at night.

I call  my copy pirated coz thats what the book seller called it. He said its ‘pirated Nigerian print’’. I tried to do a plus and minus with the words: ‘Pirated’ and ‘Nigerian print’, trying to figure out which came first. Whether it is an authorized print in Nigeria / by a Nigerian company that was later pirated by another printing company, locally too, or whether it is pirated from America and is printed illegally in Nigeria, my book is my book, sshh – I’m enjoying the dividends of demoncracy. What I got in return is 6–missing pages and some misarraged others. I had to read about 30–pages of the book backwards. To make up for the above, I also downloaded a PDF version. But thanks to whoever the chief pirate was / is, at least now, I’m more inspired than before.  And just in case you don’t know who Barrack Obama is, in 2009, you are just fortunate-un. Anyway, for short, in summary, the real and big deal is that Barrack Obama is the most powerful man in the world – presently.

The book is just sweet, I mean sweet. Muah! Its like the taste of chocolate, like when he first asked Michelle if he could kiss her (Chapter-9). Its like water: each page, each idea, each opinion, each illustration flowing from the previous and into the next – and that perfectly. Have you ever drank water and you felt you did something good for yourself? The kind of water you consciously and refreshingly feel going down your throat and into wherever, after which you feel wide–awake, revived and renewed, recharged all together? Its like when a sudden bright light shines on you, the realization that you have been in the dark all along. Its like the warmth of the morning sun, going through you, real time. Its the kind of book you read and you want to read again and again. Its the kind of book I don’t lend to someone else. I would advise you to get a copy for yourself.

Hey, if you need a review, start with this one from Wikipedia: The Audacity of Hope. As of this writing, the official website of the book is down, I mean down! The reason its down is…perhaps, President Obama is so busy in and around the White House, he has forgotten to pay for web-hosting. Oops!

Audacity

This is how answers.com defines the word: Audacity:

Bold or insolent heedlessness of restraints, as of those imposed by prudence, propriety, or convention.

The Audacity of Hope is the story of grass to grace, of hardwork, perseverance, love for family, country and the people who elected him into office. It is the story of determination. I particularly love the way he talks about his wife and children. Its quite evident that apart from the self-will to be somebody in life, they are his driving force. Truly he that finds a wife good wife finds a good thing. Chapter-6 on Faith is just spectacular. How I wish religious leaders would take a cue. I can quite relate with his other ideas and opinions about issues, and how I wish our leaders in Africa can love their country and people as much as they love themselves.

Then it struck me: Obama’s Audacity of Hope is for his own America, its people and its relations with other countries in the world. Can I have an Audacity of hope for Nigeria or mine would be a complete waste of time and effort? This would be a hard question to answer, a tough nut to crack. I can only say I would take one step at a time, just as Barrack took his.

mypenmypaper is 2-years old

I finally remembered this morning, after trying so much not to forget since January, that this weblog has added another year under its sleeves. My 1-year old anniversary post was last Jan19th, and this year, I completely forgot. Jan-19th this year was a Monday, so maybe I was extremely busy, but hey I made a post, on that same day, and still I forgot it was my blogirth-day!!!

Anyway, better late than never. 24-days after, let me say HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY PEN and MY PAPER.

The pic-below was chosen after careful consideration: a chocolate brown teddy bear, in line with my present chocolate brown theme(rounded), seated amidst candy bars. Yummy, but nothing beats Vanilla as far as I’m concerned.

  • Have I become a better person after two years of blogging? well, I don’t know if blogging makes someone a better person, kai, but just me, myself and I, and two people online who know me / read this weblog know that I blog. I can say that I’ve enjoyed it so far, its a form of journalistic-release, and I’m not planning to stop. Its also nice to read about the opinions of others. Looking back, I’m happy to get all those posts out of my head, and enjoy some great comments in the process.

How many links are in your weblog favorites, if you have one? I’m running 180, and trying to check for updates every morning has become a major problem, especially when no one is paying me to do so.

  • Who has been dropping by?: a wordpress.com hosted weblog doesn’t provide a way to get a history of top-commentators, either by counting the number of comments per commentator, or by an alphabetical sort. Maybe they could help its-free lovers like me to add such a feature.

The award goes to Diamond Hawk. I had to search her name on the ’search comments’ tab and compare with other regulars to come to this conclusion. Thanks Diamond for always dropping by. I know I haven’t been dropping by on your blog as much as you do hear, much love, I’ll change.

  • What have I been talking about? everything: what I see, didn’t see, what happened and didn’t happen. Of love, life and living in Lagos, Nigeria (how can you live in Lagos without having something to talk about?) and no where specific, basically anything that I feel like talking about.

Check the series page for a list of articles of interest? my LoveNotes and If I was governor of Lagos state series for 2008. As of this writing, the list isn’t updated, maybe when I have the time. If you do a google search for “if I were governor of Lagos state” or “LoveNotes mypenmypaper”, they’ll turn up one by one.

I’ll be starting another series real soon, so stay tuned. I’m also thinking of cross-blogging. Interested minds, holla back. Check out mypenmypaper’s resume, it still beats my imagination. I wonder what Afrobabe’s dashboard will look like. I was able to feature Gbemisola, although she hasn’t responded for part-2 of her piece; and a laborer deserves his wages by Rev. Fr. Paul I.O. etc.

Let me say I’m becoming more personal, and I can’t help it. Maybe because I feel more relaxed now that when I started.

This is just an observation: the majority of Nigerian bloggers are female. Why? and where are the guys? The difference is like 10(ten) to 1(one). Definitely, they are not playing basketball. If you have an explanation, please holla back.

P.s In celebrating my anniversary, I’ll be tantalizing myself this afternoon with two cups of vanilla ice-cream, moin-moin, jollof-rice, plantain, chicken and a pack of Five-alive(black currant).

You can join me by salivating!!
