Nigerian Christians and Muslims don’t drink alcohol but Guinness Nigeria PLC posts 89 billion Naira turnover

The major religions in Nigeria are Christianity and Islam. Even Wikipedia says so:

Nigeria is home to a variety of religions which tend to vary regionally. This situation accentuates regional and ethnic distinctions and has often been seen as a source of sectarian conflict amongst the population. The main religions are Islam (see Islam in Nigeria), Christianity (see Christianity in Nigeria), and indigenous religions, most notably Yoruba Orisha or Orisa veneration and Ifá and Igbo Odinani. Christianity is concentrated in the south while Islam dominates in the north; central regions tend to be religiously divided. The majority of Nigerian Muslims are Sunni (95%), but a significant Shia minority exists (see Shia in Nigeria). Some northern states have incorporated Sharia law into their previously secular legal systems, which has brought about some controversy. Kano State has sought to incorporate Sharia law into its constitution. Continue reading, click here

The above table/analysis is from Wikipedias: religion in Nigeria artile.

  • Christians preach against Alcohol and are commanded not to drink, as far as the Bible is concerned.
  • Muslims also preach against it, and don’t drink either – so they say!

So If Christians and Muslims make up a greater part of the population, the question is: WHO IS DRINKING BEER IN NIGERIA? WHO IS CONSUMING GUINNESS NIGERIA PLC’s’ ALCOHOL?

If I was governor of Lagos State – of Mama Lara, professional beggars and the LBC

September 14, 2009 mypenmypaper 3 comments

The sight of beggars in and around Lagos State is alarming, and calls for immediate attention and action. They are seen everywhere: market places, bus terminals, street corners, Church/Mosque vicinities, engagement / wedding ceremonies, Fast Food outlets, round-abouts etc., As Nigerians continue ‘landing in Lagos’ from all corners of the country, and hoping to ‘make it’ in one business endeavor or another, beggars also land in their numbers, hoping to ‘make it’. I have come to a conclusion that Lagosians are the most beggar-generous people in Nigeria. Some of these beggars indeed need help, and others that have no reason for becoming beggars have realized the ‘rich and abounding rewards in the Lagos Begging Company (LBC)’ Ltd, a company that has subsidiaries all over the state. They have intentionally assumed all the deplorable begging conditions. Yes, they are ‘making it’ big time. Some have even defined other means to become more pitiful than necessary – all for the sake of 20-Naira. Unfortunately, these fake-beggars contribute to the already ‘poor’ image the giant of Africa has worldwide. Can something be done about this?

If you happen to pass by Ojuelegba bus stop(under bridge) and you see a woman-beggar matching the descriptions below, then its her I am referring to:

  • she has two kids as evidence of her need for help,
  • the elder of the two is a girl, about 2years old; the younger is a boy about 6-months old,
  • she stares blankly, and downward as if she’s blind, and then
  • after she recites her prayers/well-wishes for ‘everybody’ in a vehicle awaiting more passengers, she asks for alms and calls out for her daughter ‘Lara’ – looking briefly to the left and right, as if looking for the child.

This is a long article, so kick your legs back, relax!!
